USA/Colombia Exchange 2013
For the past three years students from the Stetson Shutterbugs of John B. Stetson Charter School in North Philadelphia and Grupo Flormorado, located in the rural farming village of La Florida, in southwest Colombia have been exchanging photographs and stories over the Internet, getting to know each other, and establishing a dialog.
Both groups have fully functioning traditional darkrooms as well as digital still and video cameras, and will be utilizing the photographic techniques they have learned (such as pinhole photography, photograms, and digital photography) in their exchanges. This dialog should be particularly interesting as the students explore topics such as race, culture, family, religion, and commerce with their cameras. Two radically different perspectives of children from the inner-city in the United States and a small farming village in the Cundinamarca Province of Colombia inspire creativity and interactive learning.
In July of 2012, PWB Director Tony Rocco and PWB Board President Lina Cedeño took 5 students and 2 parents from the Stetson Shutterbugs to Colombia for 10 days. The trip was a wonderful experience and helped the students and parents from both groups establish strong bonds.
In the summer of 2013 the exchange continues when a delegation of students and chaperones from La Florida visit Philadelphia in June. They will represent Grupo Flormorado at a big exhibition at Taller Puertorriqueño which opens June 14th highlighting the work of both groups of students, as well as that of their teacher Tony Rocco. The La Florida students will then spend two weeks touring cultural and historical sights in Philadelphia, New York City, Washington DC, and Lancaster PA. While in Lancaster they will participate in a joint photography workshop with local students.
After the exhibition at Taller closes on July 20th, the Stetson Shutterbugs will fly to Colombia, meet up with the students from La Florida, and embark on a 10 day tour of Medellín, Cali, and Bogotá, sponsored by the US Embassy in Bogotá. Their trip culminates with another group exhibition in Bogotá in August.
