About

Photography Without Borders is a collaborative art program designed to engage children around the world in multi-disciplinary learning and photography-based cultural exchanges.

OUR STORY

Photography Without Borders was founded in 2010 by Philadelphia-based photographer/educator Tony Rocco who wanted to teach his students how to tell their stories with photographs.

Through Tony's position as a teacher at John B. Stetson Middle School in North Philadelphia he recruited motivated students and founded the Stetson Shutterbugs in 2010. During one of his regular trips to his mother's native Colombia that same year he met a wonderful group of Colombian youth led by Padre Angel Alfaro-Rivero, and they both thought that a photography-based cultural exchange between their respective students would be a great idea. The 2 groups met and learned all about each other over the Internet by sharing photographs and stories over the following year. In 2012 and 2013 Rocco led a 2-way cultural exchange between the groups that culminated with exciting exhibitions in Philadelphia and Bogotá. Since then PWB has recruited new Shutterbugs at Stetson as well as beginning new programs in Colombia and completed another successful exchange in the summer of 2015.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to develop and inspire young leaders by broadening their exposure to educational and cultural experiences both inside and outside their borders.
