Mission

Photography Without Borders is a collaborative art program designed to engage children in multi-disciplinary learning, photography-based cultural exchanges, leadership, writing, educational, and career opportunities.  The goal is to develop and inspire young leaders by broadening their exposure to educational and cultural experiences both inside and outside their borders.

Building young leaders

Our students are taught how their images can help change the narrative of how people see them and their communities. They become cultural ambassadors and learn how to engage people in conversations about their photos and artistic process.

Programs

Stetson Shutterbugs

Started in 2009 by Photography Without Borders' (PWB) Founder and Executive Director Tony Rocco, the Shutterbugs after school outreach program is one of the premier youth arts programs in the Philadelphia area. The program teaches youth how to tell their powerful, personal stories using traditional and digital photographic techniques. Students have participated in various cultural exchanges with other groups of students taught by Rocco in his mother's native Colombia, with students from both countries getting the opportunity to travel and exhibit their work in venues throughout Colombia and the US.

Grupo Flormorado

In 2009 PWB Executive Director Tony Rocco teamed up with Padre Angel Alfaro-Rivero, a Spanish priest who's foundation San Martín de Porres worked with children in a small rural town called La Florida.  For the next four years PWB  worked with a group of 10 youth from La Florida who called themselves Grupo Flormorado ( "Flor" means flower and "morado" means "purple" in Spanish), with Rocco traveling on his vacation time to teach these students photography out of a darkroom built in Padre Angel's home. These students participated in a cultural exchange program with Rocco's Stetson Shutterbugs where they hosted their Philadelphia partners on 3 occasions and even got to travel to the US.

Olney High School

Photography Without Borders will be starting our first high school program at Olney High School starting in September 2017. Our vision for the program is to provide career paths in the Arts for all our students by creating apprentice programs where students get real world experience in their prospective fields while still in school. Along those lines we will be building a student-run print shop in Olney that will design and print all the flyers, posters, and other print jobs for the school and potentially for the other Asprira schools as well. The students who run the program will learn customer service, design, production, and other valuable skills. Olney students will also get the same darkroom experience that has made our Shutterbug Program at Stetson so popular. More info soon!
